Abstract:

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital cardiac defect resulting from the failure of the ductus arteriosus to close after birth. It accounts for 5–10% of congenital heart anomalies and occurs in approximately 1 in 2,000 live births, often necessitating medical or surgical intervention in symptomatic cases. This report presents the case of an 11-month-old female infant who developed acute respiratory distress and was subsequently diagnosed with a large PDA complicated by left ventricular dysfunction and pulmonary overload. The patient was stabilized with medical therapy and demonstrated a favorable outcome following surgical repair. This case underscores the significance of PDA as a common congenital cardiac malformation, which can be effectively diagnosed through clinical assessment and echocardiographic evaluation. Furthermore, it highlights the efficacy of combined medical and surgical management in achieving positive outcomes, particularly in full-term infants, while also emphasizing the importance of vigilant postoperative care to prevent complications.
